Madden NFL 27 Beginner Guide

The biggest Madden in years is built around the new Persona Engine. Here's how the modes work and what to do in your first session.

The core idea

Madden NFL 27 is EA's annual American football simulation, and the headline change this year is the Persona Engine. In Franchise mode, every NFL player now has a distinct personality that informs their motivations, demands, and reactions. That means roster management is no longer just moving numbers around — players can get unhappy, hold out, or ask for a trade if you treat them poorly. On the field, gameplay is more physical, with authentic receiver-vs-defender battles, new short-yardage mechanics, smarter zone coverage, and new pre-play strategy settings.

Cross-play & player count

Madden NFL 27 supports online multiplayer. EA has said cross-play details will be shared closer to launch, so check the official online features page for the final platform list. Locally, the game supports single-player and two-player split-screen.

Tip: if you mainly play with one friend on the couch, start with two-player split-screen or a local Franchise. For the deepest experience, online Franchise and Ultimate Team are where the Persona Engine and Evos shine.

First things to do on day one

  1. Run the Skills Trainer. The new timing-based catching and coverage systems are worth practicing before you play online.
  2. Start a Franchise and meet your roster. Open the persona cards to see who is happy, who wants a raise, and who might hold out.
  3. Set up Custom Adjustments. Save your favorite offensive and defensive presets so you can apply them in one click during a game.
  4. Try Ultimate Team's Evos. Pick a few cards you like and complete their objectives to start upgrading them permanently.
  5. Check Superstar's new positions. If you want a fresh career path, the new Tight End, Edge Rusher, and Free Safety routes are a good place to start.

Beginner tips

Before you start

Confirm your machine can run it, then pick a mode. New to football sims? Start with Kick Off or a short Franchise. Want a long-term grind? Ultimate Team or a full Franchise season.
